University invests €25 million in new student residence

Purpose-built student accommodation is set to support University of Malta’s efforts to attract more foreign students.

The University of Malta committed to invest €25 million in the construction of an eight block student village with 600 beds. Vassallo Builders Group Limited won the contract to build the new complex on a site measuring 11,000 square metres in close proximity to the University Campus. The complex is scheduled to be operational by September 2018. With this investment, the University of Malta seeks to develop the competitive edge required to attract more foreign students, while also catering for the housing demand of local, mostly Gozitan, students.

The residence will be linked to the University’s main lecture centre by a tree-lined boulevard. Various outlets and facilities will be catering for students within the complex and around the plaza. The student village will be adorned with a lap pool, gym, squash court, music practice rooms, study rooms, a multi faith hall, food courts and an underground parking, which will cater for over 450 cars. Additionally the complex will host a new child care centre and the University language school.

The building of the residence is set to create 275 job opportunities within the construction sector and another 150 positions once the building is operational. Once completed, the residence will be run by a new subsidiary of the Vassallo Builders Group, Campus Residence Malta Limited.
