Malta: A European Tech Innovation Hub

Parallels is an international software company, which has been in Malta since 2015. The company has now set its sights on expanding its B2B business, says Nikolay Dobrovolskiy, co-founder and Vice President of Parallels.


Every business has a story. Can you tell us yours and explain why Parallels came to Malta?  

We are an international software company, a global leader in cross-platform solutions. Our most famous product is Parallels Desktop for Mac. This is simply the world's bestselling, top-rated, and most trusted solution for running Windows applications on your Mac without rebooting.

For business users, we have a great corporate solution for remote access - Parallels Remote Application Server, and a system for managing Macs in a Windows-based environment - Parallels Mac Management. Parallels develops convenient software for running and accessing applications and files on any device or operating system. We help customers take advantage of the best technologies out there, whether it’s Windows, Mac, iOS, Android or the сloud. Parallels solves complex engineering and user experience problems by making it simple and cost-effective for businesses and individual customers to use applications wherever they may be - local, remote, in a private datacentre or in the cloud.

We are a successful global organisation with 10 international offices worldwide and sales in more than 60 countries, keeping strong ties between our regional headquarters. Our products help businesses and individuals securely and productively use their favorite devices and preferred technology, irrespective of their actual OS, providing an intuitive end-user interface. This increases productivity and reduces complexity.

We offer our IT services internationally, and the number of countries in which we sell our products is growing. When you have many good products that are on demand in global markets - it is easy to expand. This is our story.

Parallels has been investing heavily in its Maltese branch since 2015, and we will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Today, our team in Malta consists of 40 Maltese specialists. This means that more than 12% of Parallels' worldwide employees work in our Sliema office.

 

What are the key competitive advantages of Malta?  

Malta has an interesting investment climate, and we benefit from new developments and opportunities arising in the IT industry. This is the reason why we can move forward really fast, and we can even promote the island around the world because our products originated here.

What are the biggest opportunities for your business and for the IT sector in general in Malta?

We are an innovative and ambitious company. I think that our Maltese team is really strong. For example, the Remote Application Server was created in Malta. Originally created to satisfy the local market, today this software is sold worldwide. It is quite popular, and it actually competes with other industry leading products. Nowadays, we are successfully competing with two giant companies: Citrix and VMware. Our solution is easy to install, as well as easy to use and to maintain, and our customers are very happy with it. This is the reason why we would like to further expand our offering and introduce the Parallels Remote Application Server (RAS) to Maltese corporate users. 

 

What ideas or suggestions would you give to the Maltese authorities to help the country remain relevant for IT companies? 

Malta has a really good chance to become an innovation centre. The island has a strategic location and an attractive investment climate. Additionally, the Maltese institutions are strongly supporting the industry and co-operating with the key players. We really can't complain. The Maltese Government understands that IT technologies are the 'new oil'.

What are your plans for the future? 

We want to become a leader in the sphere of remote access solutions for small- and medium-sized businesses. We think that in the near future we can become a global industry leader. The company is growing, and shifting to the B2B segment will be the next step in our evolution.

Overall, I believe that we are doing a very good job as an IT company. We always aim at improving our products, and we listen to our customers carefully - this is crucial in order to determine whether we are on the right path. Last but not least, we have a great team to execute our projects.
