Best advice that I have ever received:

  • People will forget what you said and what you did, but will not forget how you treated them and made them feel.
  • It takes a very long time to build a reputation but only a few minutes to ruin it. Hence reflect before you react.

What does a typical day in your life look like?

I stretch as much as possible before getting out of bed in the morning and wake up rather in a hurry, then I prepare hot water for my daughter's bottle and my coffee with some biscuits. I shower, dress up and go to work reflecting on the day's agenda while driving (with my mobile switched off). I arrive at work, switch on my mobile and ensure a second cup of coffee is in place. Then I go through e-mails and reply to urgent matters before I start my first meetings. Every day, week and usually even month is pre-scheduled with meetings, allowing buffers in between meetings for hands-on work. A typical day would see my last meeting scheduled to start around 16.30, so that from 17.30 onwards I have time for hands-on work and thinking time. Normally, I go back home around 19.00-19.30. On my way home I often stop to buy some groceries as would be communicated by my wife. I arrive home and ensure some quality time spent (cooling down) with my daughter and my wife while she prepares dinner, which we often eat late. I have a pretty basic work-life balance!

What business issues are high on your agenda?

New projects, sustainability and most of all resolving issues.

What motivates you to get to the office in the morning?

The challenge to push towards further progress and continuous support to industry.
